Calling all our curly haired babes! Whether you have curly hair, or maybe it’s your daughter, best friend, or boyfriend/husband that has curls, read on because these products have done wonders for my hair and I can’t wait to share! Growing up with big, puffy, long curly hair was no easy task.
I often felt ashamed of, or frequently downright annoyed with, my head of unruly hair. Between noticing other girls whispering about my “frizzy hair” and feeling the kids in class touching my hair asking if it was “real” or why it was so “crunchy,” I was always wishing that I just had straight hair.
It wasn’t until much later in life that I grew an appreciation for my curls. After years of fighting my hair, I realized it was actually super easy to manage day-to-day (compared to some of my girlfriends with straight hair) and I could quickly throw it up into what could pass for some fancy curled updo. I began to take pride in the fact that while I didn’t look like the majority of the girls I went to school with, my hair was a part of me that made me feel unique.
A Salon Specifically for Curls
Shortly after moving to NYC (I can’t believe it’s been 8 years now!) and walking by the DevaCurl Devachan Salon for the first time, I felt like I had hit a goldmine. A place that catered to people just like me, who knew how to cut, color, and treat curly hair. I was sold! After a wonderful experience, and being informed on how to actually care for my curly hair, I left with 4 products that have been staples in my hair care routine ever since.
Before we head into the products, let me start by saying that everyone’s curls are different (and beautiful in their own way)! From wavy to curly or coiled, it’s about finding what your curls need. My hair is on the dryer side and without proper products, can easily turn into a frizzy hot mess. Hence my love for DevaCurl’s Decadence line. I have tried both the Original and Decadence lines, and found my curls look best with the ultra-moisturizing Decadence products. Here’s a look at each step (and the corresponding Devacurl products), that will leave your hair feeling soft and frizz-free.
DevaCurl’s No-Poo Decadence Zero Lather Ultra Moisturizing Milk Cleanser delivers moisture and protection, gently cleansing without stripping your curls of natural oils. The blend of Chufa Milk and Quinoa Proteins nourish, moisturize, and strengthen while grapeseed oil leaves your hair silky-soft and shiny. The secret to washing curly hair? Using friction at only the scalp. Apply the No-Poo to wet hair and massage the scalp thoroughly. As you rinse, allow the water to help move the remaining product through the length of your curls so that you don’t dry out the ends. Before Devachan, I applied shampoo all over which left my ends feeling dry and brittle. Focus on just the scalp and roots, and the product will do the rest as it washes through the ends. The No-Poo is so moisturizing I usually can detangle in just this first step!
For the curls that crave extra moisture, DevaCurl’s One Condition Decadence Ultra Moisturizing Milk Conditioner is the answer for soft, frizz-free curls. This product also contains Chufa Milk and Quinoa proteins to further moisturize, protect, and soften your curls. The rich, creamy formula hydrates helping to keep curls intact as they dry. Our conditioner secret for curls? Don’t apply to the scalp. It leaves a film at the roots which can prohibit growth and can make the hair top heavy, thus preventing volume. After applying conditioner through to the ends, rinse your curls leaving in enough product so that when you scrunch the curls in your hand, you can hear a “squishy” sound. You want to make sure to leave in enough conditioner to keep your curls hydrated all day long.
BD Pro Tip: When conditioning, flip your hair over to allow you to get close enough to the root while avoiding the scalp. Sectioning while doing so allows each strand to get maximum product/hydration.
The final step that makes all the difference is styling, using the DevaCurl SuperCream Coconut Curl Styler. Over the years, I’ve tried an unfathomable amount of styling products. From gels that left curls wet and crunchy to creams that resulted in undefined and frizzy curls, finding the perfect balance of soft, defined, and frizz-free curls was a struggle. This SuperCream is infused with coconut-oil that works to soften, moisturize, define, and boost volume. This 2 step process will make a huge difference in your curls lasting all day long.
- After rinsing out the necessary amount of conditioner, apply the SuperCream Coconut Curl Styler to your wet, hydrated hair IN THE SHOWER, before drying your hair.
- After you have applied the SuperCream, dry hair with a microfiber towel scrunching the curls from their ends up to your scalp in sections. Terry Cloth towels have a coarse texture that can cause frizz. The Devatowel Anti-Frizz Microfiber Towel has a soft, smooth surface that absorbs just enough water to allow the products to set curls while keeping them defined and frizz-free. After curls have thoroughly dried (air-dry for convenience, or using this amazing diffuser if you have the time) shake out the curls at the root to give an extra boost of volume.
Like many, we’re trying not to wash our hair so often and this SuperCream can literally bring dull curls back to life. On the mornings that your curls need a little sprucing, gently get the curls damp, run the SuperCream over the curls (twist any curls that need more defining around your finger) and voilà! Good as new!
For the times when you can’t get to a beauty store, Devachan Salon, Ricky’s, or Sephora to pick up this DevaCurl SuperCream, a comparable drug-store (or Amazon Prime) find is the OGX Moroccan Curling Perfection Defining Cream. Similar in consistency and results, this is our recommendation for THE other trusted go-to for curly haired babes.
Note: There is a DevaCurl product called Styling Cream Touchable Curl Definer that looks very similar in packaging to the SuperCream Coconut Curl Styler. It’s totally about what works best for your curls, but the Touchable Curl Definer Cream tends to have a more waxy texture that can leave curls feeling greasy and weighed down. We’re always curious to hear what’s worked for YOU so share with us below!
Last, but not least, a hair mask! I’ve only recently started using hair masks regularly (I know Lauren has a few up her sleeve) and what a difference it’s made! DevaCurl’s Heaven In Hair is literally, just that. Great for all types of curls (wavy, curly, coiled, or tightly coiled) this mask is a deep conditioning treatment that drenches curls with cupuaçu butter (long-lasting moisture) murumuru butter (protection + shine) and cacao butter (softens + nourishes). This mask will make your hair not only more silky and soft but also easier to style and manage. After washing and conditioning, apply a generous amount of the mask just as you would conditioner, wrap your curls in a hair clip, and if you have some extra time apply a shower cap for up to an hour for maximum hydration (otherwise, leave on for 15-30 mins and rinse).
Tips For A Frizz-Free Blowout
As you likely know, we both love a good blowout but they can be super damaging to your hair (esp if colored or blonde, more on those products coming soon). Here are 3 tips to leave blowouts frizz-free and silky smooth.
- Bay Breeze Hydrating Shots– Have your stylist use a full bottle (shot) after washing for extra moisture and a high-gloss shine. (Still have them use conditioner after, just not at the roots.)
- Davines Ol All In One Milk– Besides a heat protectant, this is the only other product I use after washing and never enter the salon without. Lightweight, extra-hydrating, and shine-enhancing, it helps to control and protect from frizz. This spray not only smells amazing but leaves hair feeling incredibly soft and silky. This was first discovered while getting a blowout in Florence, Italy and my hair had never felt so soft!
- Request the use of a Boar Bristle Round Brush, not a Ceramic/Metal one. It will leave hair with less frizz!
We hope this has inspired you to love your hair, knowing now that a brand exists with products for all types of curls! May you always wear your curls bouncy, soft, wild, and free, but most of all, wear them with pride! What curl products have worked for you? If you don’t have curly hair, what are some other concerns you’d like us to cover (best of blonde is coming, but we know there’s more!). We’re always on the lookout for products that help us to embrace our beauty and can’t wait to hear from you!
All things beautiful,
