Shape House Review | Sweat and Detoxify

Who’s ready to SWEAT (not from traditional cardio!)? Sweat Therapy has existed for centuries as an ancient wellness practice and has gained more notoriety in the wellness space today. Sweating is known for its calming restorative properties for both mind and body, often being used as part of spiritual ceremonies, healing rituals, and hygienic practices. Shape House, otherwise known as the urban sweat lodge, is complete with both lymphatic drainage treatments and custom made FAR infrared sweat wraps. Shape House offers the full detox experience by bringing both treatments under one roof- a modern day sweat lodge making sweating a convenient, affordable, and rejuvenating experience for all.

Shape House

The Essentials- Need to Know

Space + Ambience:

Place: Shape House

About: The experience began with a full body compression suit for Lymphatic Drainage and concluded with an FRA infrared wrap to complete the detox. The detoxification process frees the body of toxic chemicals, pathogens, and heavy metals from the body. Sweat and lymphatic drainage sessions help to cleanse from the inside out.

Neighborhood: Flatiron (locations also in Dumbo, UES, and UWS)

Vibes: Shape House has a minimalist aesthetic that we found to be clean and simple. While the lobby is bright and welcoming, the rest of the space is dimly lit with red lighting providing a calm and peaceful atmosphere.

Luxuries:

Lobby: We were greeted in the lobby by the friendly and super knowledgeable Shape House staff. After being prepped for our experience, we waited a few short minutes and were quickly led back to the changing rooms.

Bathroom: The bathrooms were spacious, clean, and also had showers.

Shape House Bathrooms

Treatment Room: Each treatment room is sectioned off with curtains to maintain a private and intimate space for the clients. All rooms are complete with TVs pre-loaded with Netflix (we were binging Orange is the New Black at the time and finished 2 whole episodes through both treatments!) and glass alkaline water bottles.

Recovery Room: Post lymphatic/sweat session, we were guided to a large red-lit room filled with canopy chairs to recover (cooldown), rest, and recharge from the detoxification process.

The Main Event- Behind the Scenes

The Set-Up:

The upbeat Shape House staff provided us with an in-depth prep of what to expect in our lymphatic drainage and sweat sessions. We were led back to the changing rooms and were provided with a set of Shape House branded loose pajama-like sweatpants, long-sleeved shirt, and socks. We changed quickly and stored our clothing/personal items in a provided crate. You are welcome to bring your own clothing and socks for your sweat. Think loose, breathable, cotton fabrics as opposed to skintight items. Bring extra clothes if you do choose to wear own set of clothing to sweat, because you will definitely be drenched post-sweat. Just for our own perceived sanitary reasons (not specific to Shape House), we like to bring our own clothes. It’s similar to renting shoes at a Cycle class or bringing your own, totally up to you!

The Treatment: Lymphatic Drainage + Sweat

Lymphatic Drainage:

Our experience began with a Lymphatic Drainage treatment. The Shape House team highly recommends doing the lymphatic drainage prior to sweating to get your circulation and blood flow going. You are able to book either a sweat or lymphatic session separately.

You probably have heard about our OBSESSION with the lymphatic system, in major part due to the role it plays in detoxification, fighting inflammation and defense for your immune system (lymphatic drainage facial anyone?!).

The 55-minute lymphatic treatment promotes and ignites circulation of the lymphatic system, which is directly linked to cardiovascular function and the immune system. Shape House offers a Lymphatic drainage session that is done through compression technology (AKA, a full body compression suit that looks a bit like an inflated space suit). After slipping into compression sleeves, full-leg boots, and corset, we were able to comfortably rest on a bed with headphones and access to Netflix or music of choice. The full-body compression suit provides targeted pressure to arms, legs, and waist, to encourage lymphatic circulation. We found this portion of the treatment to be extremely relaxing and would equate it to the sensations of getting a surface level massage. (This felt so good on sore muscles!) Check out some of the main benefits below!

The Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage:
  • Boost the immune system through awakening lymph nodes (AKA the little drains throughout your body necessary for detoxification)
  • Aids in digestion and improves a sluggish colon
  • Fights inflammation allowing lymph nodes to properly drain
  • Can, therefore, provide relief from asthma, earaches, heart fatigue, fibromyalgia, and many other inflammation-based diseases
  • Ease menstrual cramps
  • Improves the appearance of cellulite through boosting circulation
  • Induces a deep feeling of relaxation that leads to better sleep

Sweat:

After our lymphatic drainage session, we were guided to a different room with an FAR infrared sweat wrap. (Shape House actually manufactures their own wraps and continually updates based on client feedback!). The sweat room has a TV so you can catch up on your favorite shows or movies during your sweat (and to distract your mind from the rising temps). The FAR infrared sweat wrap heats the body from the inside out providing a truly detoxifying and cleansing experience.

Sweating is one of the most effective ways to naturally eliminate toxins, chemicals, heavy metals, fat, and other wastes from your body.

In our opinion, “sweat” isn’t quite the right term to describe just how drenched you get. At Beauty Disclosed we’re all about honesty, and honestly, it was really REALLY hot. The wrap heats up quickly and you find yourself breaking a Bikram yoga type of sweat. Throughout the treatment, a Shape House employee came back to check-in with more alkaline water (to help balance your pH) and cool lavender towels (the saving grace).

We found it challenging to keep our minds calm and our breath steady and full. The last 10 minutes, were actually tough. Per the team’s instruction, we both removed one arm from wrap for fresh air and relief from the heat. After our sweat was finally complete, we were led to the recovery room for more alkaline water (which we quickly drank), and oranges to help restore electrolytes.

The Benefits of Sweating:
  • Weight Loss
  • Detoxifies impurities from the skin
  • Improves the quality of sleep
  • Reinforces heart strength and endurance while relieving muscle strain
  • Widely used meditative aid-encourages the body to completely relax, while stimulating endorphin release, which helps alleviate negative emotions and provides clarity
  • Boost immunity, mood, and energy
  • Reduces stress

Ideal For: Both the lymphatic drainage + sweat are great for anyone looking to have an intense detoxification experience. Do not sweat if you have a chronic condition that makes you extremely sensitive to temperature, have recently sustained an injury and/or recently had surgery, have hemophilia or take certain medications (including some blood thinners), or are pregnant. Always check with your doctor before booking if you are concerned and/or have any questions about sweating.

The Afterglow- Our Thoughts

How We Felt:

Hot, cleansed, totally detoxified, and refreshed. Our skin looked amazing and we had a glow reminiscent of a VERY good facial.

Would We Do It Again:

Yes, mostly for the benefits. We wouldn’t say that it was the most comfortable/relaxing experience, however, we hear that after a couple of times you know what to expect and begin to get used to (and look forward to) the feeling of a super deep detox. We also recommend drinking TONS of water post-treatment and using our fave hydration multiplier Liquid IV.  Also, because of sweating, your pores are open therefore allowing any skincare to more deeply penetrate. We love Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide Cream and Drunk Elephant Sakari Baby Facial Serum.

Keep Glowing Pro Tip:

“You can get an incredible facial on either coast, burn calories at the gym, reduce stress through meditation, rest and rejuvenate almost anywhere. Only at shape house, can you do it all at once.”
